OUR STORY

We're the Mulvihills. Thanks for stopping by!

We own and operate a regenerative family farm were we raise grass-fed, pasture-raised poultry, beef, and pork. We do not use vaccines and our animals don't do drugs. They are happy and healthy and we treat each one with the dignity they deserve. A little secret, we even name some of our animals. If you stop by our farm we'll introduce you to a couple of our cows, Dolly and Foxy, and our pigs Annie, Alexander Hamilton (Hammy), Betty, and all their babies. Our farm is environmentally-friendly, builds soil, and allows animals to function the way God created them-outside, eating grass, and moving around. We think one of the ways we can love our neighbor is to provide local, antibiotic-free, beyond organic, nutrient dense, farm to table food.

Our farm began in 1857 when 160 acres was purchased from President James Buchanan and the U.S. government for $50. It was part of the westward expansion and settled by true pioneers before Minnesota gained statehood. The property has operated as a farm for over 150 years and has been known for producing some of the best beef in the area.

Our journey to the farm was never a life dream, but when we step outside we are reminded what a blessing it is to live where we do. We are greeted each morning with the sounds of birds, the rustle of wind in the trees, the songs of crickets at dusk, and gaze at the handiwork of God as the night sky lights up with a million stars. We love doing life with our children; working together, playing together, and living an adventurous life. Jen and I both grew up in the Twin Cities suburbs. Jen had a cat and I had fish, which was the closest we came to farm animals.

In 2013, we did something our friends and family thought was a little crazy. We bought 6 chicks and started a small flock on our 2 acre property in Victoria, Minnesota. I know, we were living on the wild side. But something funny happened. We actually enjoyed fresh eggs and raising chickens.

We were content with a small flock and it was all we could handle at the time. Our children were little and our family was growing. I served as a pastor at Grace Church of Eden Prairie and was working on a PhD. Jen was homeschooling our children and renovating our 100 year old farmhouse. As time went on, we started learning about the industrial food system, our eyes were opened to all the toxic chemicals used in farming, and the nutritional deficiency of factory raised food. We decided that we wanted to raise as much of our own food as possible, so we increased our flock of chickens and added Kune Kune pigs.

The Covid shutdown was a game-changer for us. For the first time, we saw the fragility of the American food system and our complete dependency on the grocery store, which didn't even exist until 1946. We decided that we wanted greater self-sufficiency, the slower pace of country living, and found what we were looking for at Prairie Hill Farm in Lester Prairie, Minnesota.

We are still pretty new at this whole farming thing, but we are catching on quick. Josh is also an author and speaker and he equips families and churches to raise the next generation to love Jesus. Jen homeschools our five children, provides leadership to the Wings homeschool ministry at Grace Church, and is the founder of a homeschool band with more than 80 children. We've written a bunch of books on family discipleship for parents and grandparents and speak all over the country.
